Rete di Reti

In the future Users, Enterprises, Providers and even machines will produce, consume and elaborate pervasive services and large amounts of data. Computation, storage and communication services will be highly pervasive: people, smart objects, machines, platforms and the surrounding space (e.g., with sensors, RFID tags, etc.) will create a highly decentralized common pool of resources (up to the edge) interconnected by a dynamic “Network of Networks” (NoNs).

The “NoNs” for crunching massive data and for allowing communications between intelligent devices will be highly distributed and ubiquitous. This pervasive network has to be flexible enough to accommodate different computing and communications paradigms (such as, client-server, peer-to-peer and traditional network-centered control). Resources will not belong anymore to one single administrative domain, so the aggregation of resources should be carried out in a dynamic and cooperative way.
Current service architectures (such as SOA) and virtualization architectures (such as GRID and cloud computing) are not able to support this evolution towards high pervasiveness of the network and towards an increased amount of storage and computing resources to be exploited and managed at the edge.
The evolution towards this “NoNs” vision is based on a cloud of autonomic components, that represent functions and resources of the underneath networks. They follow the rules of autonomic computing, and implement the self-CHOP principles (i.e., self-Configuration, self-Healing, self-Optimization, self-Protection). The characteristics of the self-* are required as such environments will be complex, dynamic and impossible to manage in a centralized way.
